Guide to repairing your laptop screen

Without a screen, it is more than reasonable to assume that a computer, whether portable or stationary, is useless. You can't access content online or just work because of course you can't see what you're typing! Because an unfortunate event can always happen and crack your screen, here is a guide to learn how to replace your Asus laptop screen, explained step by step and accessible to all.

Differences between touch screens and LCD screens

Today, touch screens are omnipresent: present in your phones, tablets, laptops and devices (eg refrigerators). Basically, a touchscreen allows you to interact directly with the screen using your finger or stylus instead of a mouse, keyboard, or touchpad.

When the touch screen breaks, however, the device can still function. The touch screen (or digitizer) is the thin transparent layer that reads ("digitizes") the signal (your touch) and provides the information needed by the processor to execute your command.

The touch screen and the LCD screen are therefore two separate parts. It is quite possible that the touchscreen is broken and the LCD screen behind it is still working. Conversely, the LCD screen displays the image and when it is broken, you can still use the touch screen, but the panel will have dark spots or cracks (or both). If both are damaged, you can still see parts of the image and the touchscreen may work partially but your device no longer works. While you can use your laptop with an external monitor, it has obviously lost one of its most attractive features: portability. We will see later how to replace the screen of your Asus Laptop PC, but for now let's take a look at the most common potential problems.

LCD Screens - Most Common Problems

  • No picture
  • The screen turns off by itself after a short while
  • The screen is very dark and difficult to read
  • The screen is white with no visible image
  • The screen shows one or more vertical colored lines which should not appear
  • The screen takes a long time to light up
  • The screen displays "no signal"

Below we will list the different components that make up a screen and their links with the problems mentioned above.

What causes LCD screen problems?

1. Power Supply

The power supply unit is responsible for supplying power to each component of an LCD display, among other things. Problems with the power supply will be reflected in the device as a whole and on your screen.

2. Backlight

The backlight diffuses light capable of passing through the LCD crystals. When the backlight is damaged, the screen may appear dark or somewhat faded. It is possible to improve the image by maximizing the brightness, but some repair will eventually be necessary.

3. Inverter

Typically located in the lower part of the LCD screen, the inverter supplies power to the screen backlight module. Likewise, it monitors that the LEDs that compose it remain stable and functional. If the inverter is faulty and therefore cannot supply the correct current and voltage to the backlight, the brightness of the display will be affected.

4. Controller board

The controller card not only decodes signals from the graphics card but also controls the inverter, power supply and LCD display.

5. LCD Screen

From simple physical damage to wear-damaged pixels, the LCD screen is prone to many troubles. However, great strides have been made in the durability of these displays, although they are still quite fragile. So there is less chance of the screen being cracked or broken.

All of these components can be replaced. Accessoires Asus can help you locate the correct parts for your Asus device.

Repairing a broken or cracked screen – Do it yourself!

The first piece of advice we give to anyone wishing to replace or repair the screen of their device is to work methodically and with patience. For those who do it regularly, this is a fairly quick and easy process, but in most cases, taking your time will be more profitable. You should have a clean, well-lit workspace.

If you are uncomfortable with taking your device apart or replacing the broken screen, we can only urge you to find an ASUS Certified Professional Repair Service for the safety of a job well done.

Most repair shops will ask you to purchase the parts, however, Asus Accessories is here to help you locate the exact parts you will need for your repair.

Follow the 5 steps below to repair and replace the cracked or damaged screen of your laptop PC without any hassle. Please note that the instructions described are written as a generic guide, the location of certain parts may change from one laptop model to another, for example the screws.

1. Evaluate the problems or damage

Is your laptop working properly?

Does your laptop power on correctly? We recommend that you connect your laptop to an external monitor to be sure. You may need to access settings or use certain function keys for the external display to be recognized. If the external monitor is working fine, you can assume that the problem is with your laptop screen assembly or the EDP / LVDS cable.

Inspect the laptop

Once you determine that it is not another component such as graphics card or a software issue that is causing this screen issue, you should inspect for physical damage (if applicable, cracked screen, broken...). Is the frame around the screen (the bezel) damaged, is the screen itself damaged, is there a point of impact...? If the bezel has been damaged, you will have to buy a new bezel, there are no other solutions. Please note that sometimes these are only sold as part of the full screen module. Also check that the hinges are intact and secure, as the cables connecting the LCD screen to the motherboard go through the hinges.

2. Find the right screen

This is the easiest part for your ASUS laptop. Locate your laptop serial number and contact us. We will resend you the correct link to your laptop screen. You can usually find this number on the label on the bottom of your laptop PC or alternatively by going to the BIOS.
In Windows, open the command console:

  • Go to the Start menu and in Search type: CMD The screen below should appear

  • In the console (here under C: \ Users \ "Name") type exactly: wmic bios get serial number
  • Press Enter and then the serial number will be displayed on your screen.

3. Aquire the right tools, then open your screen

You will need some specific tools to open your damaged screen:

  • First and foremost a clean and flat workspace
  • Thin-bladed knife or similar to remove the bezel from screen
  • Screwdrivers suitable for the screws used
  • A second corner to remove the bezel from the screen
  • A small bowl to keep the screws safe

If needed, you will find a recommended toolkit for your Asus computer here.

Steps

Unplug all power sources

Turn off your laptop and make sure it is unplugged from a power source. You should also remove the battery to avoid causing other potential problems. Remember: Avoid touching components without touching a grounded outlet… static electricity can damage your components.

The display bezel may have a few screw covers near the bottom of the display, towards the hinges.

Carefully remove the stickers and screws

Gently remove the screw covers using a needle or thin blade. Store them for use when installing your new display.

You will then want to use the appropriate screwdriver to remove the screws. Please do not apply excessive pressure when removing the screws. Store the screws in a dish.

Remove the bezel

Remove the bezel using a putty knife or fine-bladed toothless knife. Mostly take your time, you don't want to damage the bezel and have to buy a new one because of the rush. The wedge is used to lift the frame of the LCD screen cover. There are plastic tabs at regular intervals that hold the screen and bezel in place. You will need to apply enough pressure to separate them.

If you damage your bezel, we are always available to find the correct one for your laptop model.

Remove the LCD screen

You should now have easy access to the LCD screen. It will be attached to the metal frame of the laptop. There will be two screws in the top corners. You may find a few additional screws securing the LCD screen to the sides, and in some cases strong tape holding the LCD screen in place. You will need to remove them. Place the screws in a different dish (label the dish). If you ever had to remove an adhesive, you will need to replace it with a new adhesive to properly install the new screen.

Disconnect the connection cables

Attention, your screen is always connected to the lower case by the EDP / LVDS cable. You will need to disconnect the cable. If there is tape, remove it before separating the connectors.

Apply straight and even pressure when pulling, do not twist them.

Insert the new screen

You will now reassemble everything. Just follow the above steps in reverse order. Place the new screen flat and connect the EDP / LVDS cable. Please make sure the connectors are properly aligned. Secure the new screen with the appropriate screws and adhesive to hold the LCD screen in place.

Reattach the bezel

Replace the bezel. Align it so that it snaps securely into the display housing. Make sure the bezel is snug. Replace the two screws and screw covers.

Restart the current

Insert the battery, connect your laptop and start it.

Update BIOS and drivers

It is always recommended to update BIOS and drivers after installing new equipment. We spoke about it elsewhere in the guide "Tutorial to change the motherboard of your desktop computer"

You can easily find the information on this site.

And viola! You have just repaired your previous cracked or broken screen with a new and official Asus product.
